Live less Blue Mondays and more Happy Mondays

Updated: Sep 21, 2023

Another Blue Monday, the most depressing day of the year. What if we ignored this so-called depressing day and instead lingered on a Happy Monday, or even several happy Mondays throughout the year!

Blue Monday_Happy Monday

Since 2005, the 3rd Monday in January has been declared Blue Monday because it is supposedly the most depressing day of the year. With the pandemic, our social relationships and activities have taken a hit, some have even lost their jobs and several entrepreneurs have closed down. We could therefore expect that, this year, Blue Monday will be more difficult than the previous ones, considering that it is really the most gloomy day of the year. Anyway, Blue Monday is not the only day when morale can be at its lowest. I'll extend the problem to all Mondays, as I'm sure you'll agree, it's far from being the favourite day of the week for most people. So how can we live happy Mondays?

ACCEPT THE MOMENT

When Sunday evening comes, we are in a kind of small mourning of the weekend, because we would like to enjoy it a little longer. That's why we love Monday holidays so much. So how can we welcome Mondays with a little more enthusiasm or, at least, with less resistance? This can be done by accepting that we live through cycles (in the sense of a process that repeats itself in the same order) such as the cycle of seasons, the cycle of a year, the menstrual cycle for example. Mondays will always come back, so why not instead see them as the day when we get back in the saddle to live a beautiful week.

HAVE A POSITIVE ATTITUDE

Adopting a positive attitude means deciding to make candy with what you have on hand that is less appealing. It is choosing to take a favorable position with regard to what you are going through, despite the difficulties and challenges you encounter. It's believing that the day will be pleasant and that every other Monday will have the same pleasant taste. If we convince ourselves that this day is the best day of the week, it will be. Through positive conditioning of mood and behaviour it is possible to see beauty. So, instead of dragging yourself out of bed on Monday morning as if two cannonballs were tied to your feet, isn't it better to get up with gusto, put on a broad smile and repeat statements such as "this day is wonderful! » ? It will become a good time. You'll have to keep repeating it throughout the day and hold on to it, because it's not like a glitch won't happen. The important thing is to stay positive.

TREAT YOURSELF ON MONDAYS

Instead of waiting until Friday, Saturday or Sunday to treat yourself, do it on Monday: the movie you want to see on Netflix, the restaurant you want to go to or order a meal from, the long walk you take to clear your mind, the crafts or other activities you like to do but book at the end of the week, it's time to move them to Monday. You can also start doing new things on Monday, whether it's starting the day with a latte instead of a coffee, spending a few minutes at noon reading a book that's been sitting on your bedside table for months, or playing a board game at night. If you organize your day with activities that you enjoy and limit chores, you'll look forward to Monday.

FREE YOURSELF FROM THE MYTH OF BLUE MONDAY AND TURN TO BREW MONDAY

Blue Monday is a myth. It is the result of a mathematical calculation that identified the 3rd Monday in January as the most depressing Monday of the year, but there are no scientific studies to support it. Moreover, depression is not limited to a specific day of the year. It is a mental health problem and if you feel this way, seek help. This is especially true in this period of confinement where human contact outside the home is very limited.

The British Samaritan organization decided to take a positive approach to this day by transforming it into Brew Monday. The principle is to be able to create connections with other people by talking over a cup of tea to break the negative emotions felt when going through difficult times. The meeting will of course be virtual this year. For more information, visit their web page :
